Greg Herring founded Herring Law Group to more efficiently and effectively serve his select family law clients. HLG serves “the 805” and beyond.

HLG’s second attorney, Ruston Imming, brings over a decade of family law experience in the Santa Barbara County courts. He is a force with a valuable combination of intellect, common sense, drive and professional presence.
Cassie Glanville, a UCSB undergraduate who attended UC Hastings College of the Law, is our third attorney. She previously practiced family law in Santa Barbara, and with a top San Francisco firm.
Executive Director, Erin Schaden, is a family law lawyer who is licensed in multiple states. She does not practice in California, but she provides legal assistance and presses HLG toward streamlined and client-focused operations.
Cyndi Hitsman is our Certified Paralegal. She brings formal paralegal certification, extensive experience and advanced ESI/E-discovery credentials.
Deanna Cerda is HLG’s Office Manager. Teresa McGrath is our outstanding Legal Assistant. Kelsey Sturgeon is our new Paralegal.

Greg is certified as a Family Law Specialist by the Board of Legal Specialization of the State Bar of California. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (aaml.org; socal.aaml.org) and of the International Academy of Family Lawyers (iafl.org). He has the highest possible ratings for both skill and ethics, “AV Preeminent,” from Martindale-Hubbell’s Peer Review Ratings. He has been annually listed as a Southern California “Superlawyer” since 2007 and one of “Southern California’s Best Lawyers” since 2008.

Out of the office and courtroom, Greg is a family man with outdoor interests including beekeeping, fly fishing and surfing. He is the proprietor of Herring Beer Farm, where he grows hops and brews a variety of ales. Ruston Imming is a results-driven attorney with more than ten years of settlement and litigation experience in complex, high-conflict family law cases. He is a resourceful and keen researcher who is noted for developing and executing effective case strategies. He also provides a strong courtroom presence, particularly in Santa Barbara County.
Ruston was an associate (2005-2012), and then a partner (2012-2015), in the Santa Barbara family law firm, Misho|Imming, LLP. Greg Herring developed respect for him while litigating major Santa Barbara cases over the years. Ruston could hit hard, but he always maintained the professionalism and ethical standards on which Herring Law Group stands. He is a zealous advocate, but also a principled one.
In 2004, he interned for Santa Barbara County Superior Court Judge James Brown (Ret.).
Ruston grew up in northern San Luis Obispo County and attended UC Santa Barbara on a golf scholarship. He has been a part of the Santa Barbara legal community since 1998, when he began working during his sophomore year for a group of attorneys involved in family law, civil litigation and a variety of other areas.
An avid golfer, Ruston is a dedicated family man. He, with his wife and two daughters, enjoys all water sports and especially water skiing.

Our Executive Director is Erin E. Schaden, an attorney licensed to practice in Maryland, New Mexico and the District of Columbia. She is an experienced family law practitioner and law firm administrator. As an integral part of our client preparation team, Erin provides legal assistance to our licensed California attorneys and keeps Herring Law Group running on all cylinders. Since she is not licensed to practice in California she cannot and does not provide legal advice.
From 2005-2010 Erin served as an attorney with Webb & Associates in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She managed and litigated family law cases from intake through trial.
In 2004-2005 she was an attorney with the Albuquerque-based family law firm, Atkinson & Kelsey. Like Herring Law Group, Atkinson & Kelsey is involved in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Erin was committed to the AAML’s principles then, as she remains now.
She was a staff attorney with Law Access New Mexico in 2003-2004. There, she reviewed family law and bankruptcy work. She also developed her administrative skills, creating training modules and establishing office procedures to ensure consistent quality case handling. She developed computer and database systems for staff attorneys and helped resolve client complaints.
In 2002-2003, Erin was the Director of the Client Services Unit for DNA People’s Legal Services, Inc., a non-profit legal aid organization in Crownpoint, New Mexico.
Through her own firm, she served the greater Maryland and Washington, D.C. area from 1997- 2001. She focused on family law and domestic violence litigation, criminal defense and bankruptcy. While managing her practice, she also held a position on the Correctional Reform Section of the Maryland State Bar (1998 -2001) and served as an attorney for The Lawyers at Bail Project in Baltimore, Maryland (1998-2000).
Erin has been a committed and energetic presence throughout her career, and Herring Law Group is fortunate to have her on board.
Ms. Glanville brings recent experience practicing with a prominent San Francisco firm, specializing in complex, high-conflict family law matters. She worked with sophisticated and high income individuals facing difficult and complicated issues. Her attention to detail and strong research and writing skills are particular strengths. At Herring Law Group, clients also appreciate her tenacity as she drills into facts.
Ms. Glanville attended the University of California, Santa Barbara for her undergraduate degree. She attended law school at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco. While there, she worked as a judicial extern at the San Francisco County Superior Court Unified Family Court. She also worked at the Alameda County Superior Court, focusing on family law and domestic violence matters.
Prior to practicing in San Francisco, Ms. Glanville pursued her family law career in Santa Barbara. In 2012, she was awarded the McLafferty Scholarship, provided by the Santa Barbara Women Lawyer’s Foundation in part for her dedication to the Santa Barbara community.
Ms. Glanville is eager to apply her experience and talents to the unique communities in Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties, and beyond.

Cyndi Hitsman has worked in the legal field since 1987, and has held her Certified Paralegal designation since 2001. She has also held an Advanced Paralegal Certificate from the National Association of Legal Assistants in Discovery since 2007, a designation held by only 71 paralegals in the State of California.
Cyndi has worked almost exclusively in litigation and specializes in document management, discovery and ESI (Electronically Stored Information) as it relates to litigation and family law. She recently completed the comprehensive 2015 Arkfeld eDiscovery and Digital Evidence Course covering all aspects of electronic discovery issues in litigation ranging from data types, hardware and software, collection, legal preservation, processing and production issues.
Cyndi has been a member of the National Association of Legal Assistants, California Alliance of Paralegal Associations. She has served on the board of the Santa Barbara Paralegal Association and is a Past-President of the Ventura County Paralegal Association. Cyndi was a board member of the University of California at Santa Barbara Paralegal Extension Program during the time they were obtaining their ABA accreditation. She worked for seven years for the Honorable James E. Herman during his presidency of the Santa Barbara County Bar Association and his appointment to the California State Bar Board of Governors. She has also presented a number of MCLE approved continuing education programs including trial preparation, e-discovery/ESI, document management, paralegal compliance, ethics and technology.
When not working, Cyndi enjoys spending time with her two sons, running, riding her motorcycle, participating in obstacle course events and is currently working toward her second-degree black belt in Taekwondo.
